Glass Table Tops: A Buyer’s Guide

A glass table top can transform a piece of furniture — whether you’re protecting a cherished dining table, topping a bespoke base, or replacing a broken panel.

Types of Glass

• Clear float glass — standard choice, faint green tint
• Low iron (extra clear) — crystal-clear, colourless
• Tinted glass — grey, bronze, blue
• Frosted / sandblasted — translucent, contemporary

Toughened or Standard?

• Toughened glass — stronger, safer, shatters into granules. Recommended for dining tables and desks.
• Standard (annealed) — suitable for decorative tops and protective overlays. More affordable.

Once toughened, glass cannot be cut or modified.

Thickness Guide

• 6mm — small protective covers (up to 600mm × 600mm)
• 8mm — medium tables and desks (up to 1200mm × 600mm)
• 10mm — most popular for dining tables. Substantial feel.
• 12mm — large dining and conference tables
• 15mm+ — very large or structural. Contact us for advice.

If the glass sits on a full surface, thinner works. If it spans an open frame, go thicker.

Edge Finishes

• Flat polished — smooth, transparent. Most popular.
• Pencil polished — slightly rounded, softer feel
• Bevelled — angled edge, classic elegance
• Arrissed — lightly smoothed, for hidden edges

Corner Options

• Square — sharp 90° corners
• Dubbed (clipped) — small straight cut across each corner
• Radius corners — rounded (R10 most popular)
• Fully rounded — large radius for oval/racetrack shapes
