Toughened laminated is the most common specification for canopies exposed to significant wind or snow loads. Typical make-ups start around 13.5 mm toughened laminate and go thicker as loadings increase. The exact specification should come from the structural engineer and the glazing system being used.
Some canopy specialists do successfully use 10 mm toughened where the system and calculated loads allow it. The decision is driven by the engineering, not a blanket rule.
Laminate Performance Outdoors Long-Term
Toughened laminated glass performs well outdoors when correctly detailed. Structural strength does not degrade over time under normal conditions. The main risk is prolonged contact with stagnant water — particularly in vertical channels on garden rooms or similar structures — which can lead to delamination. Good drainage and maintenance avoid this. Horizontal roof applications rarely see the problem if water can run off.
