Do not start with a product name. Start with what the glass has to do if it breaks, what holds it in, and who signs the design off.
Balustrade glass for trade installers
Balustrade glass thickness is not governed by height alone. It depends on load, fixing system and whether the glass itself provides fall arrest. Post-and-rail with a fixed handrail can often take 8–12 mm toughened glass. Frameless base-channel, spigot and point-fixed systems at height usually need toughened laminated glass so the panel stays in the system after breakage.

High-traffic shop fronts are commonly specified in laminate glass (often around 10.8 mm). Fire-rated doors and screens need a certified make-up, not a guess. Mirrors that are screw-fixed need safety backing. Programmes slip when the glass is measured last and ordered without the certificates.

Slimline and heritage glass units
Sightline and appearance decide whether a heritage unit gets through. A unit that is too thick, or that looks modern in a historic frame, gets rejected. Slimline and vacuum heritage DGUs exist to keep proportions close to original single glazing.

Toughened glass and mirrors for furniture and kitchens
Fully supported tabletops can often run 6 mm subject to size. Where the glass is the top and only sits on legs, 10 mm toughened glass is the practical minimum. Splashbacks are usually 6 mm toughened or 6 mm mirror. Screw-fixed mirrors should be safety-backed.

Higher wind and snow loads usually mean toughened laminated glass — often 13.5 mm or thicker, signed off by the structural engineer. Some systems still run 10 mm toughened where loadings allow. Laminate outdoors is fine if water cannot sit in vertical channels.

Viewing windows and jump guards are not the same product. Pond viewing windows are always toughened laminated glass, typically 21.5 mm or thicker, specified by the pond fabricator. Jump guards are nearly always 10 mm single toughened glass. Low-iron is common on viewing panels. Heat-soak is available if required.

When must trade use toughened laminated glass instead of toughened glass?
When the pane itself has to keep acting as a barrier after breakage — frameless balustrades at height, overhead glazing, many canopies, and pond viewing windows. Toughened glass alone can be correct where a handrail or frame provides the fall arrest and the engineer’s loadings allow it.
Do you calculate structural loads or water pressure for trade jobs?
No. Structural and pond calculations sit with the designer or fabricator. We supply cut-to-size glass to that specification.
Can you heat-soak toughened glass for trade orders?
Yes, if specified. Heat-soak testing is an extra process for additional peace of mind against nickel sulphide breakage. It is not required on every pane.
What is the largest cut-to-size glass panel you can supply?
Toughened glass up to 5000 × 3000 mm in appropriate thicknesses (typically 10 mm or thicker), and larger on request. 6 mm is not suitable at those sizes. Toughened laminated sizes depend on make-up.
Do you supply fire-rated glass off the shelf?
Fire-rated glass is manufactured to order as part of a certified system. We quote it. Do not treat it like a standard toughened pane.
